ARTwain

In development

ARTwain

Art in two eyes.

Stereoscopic art and 3D experiences for AR glasses. One picture for each eye. Your phone in your hand.

Above: Charles's Wain, the Big Dipper. Left eye, right eye.

What it is

A gallery for your eyes. Both of them.

ARTwain is an app for display-type AR glasses. It shows Charlie Caper's stereoscopic artworks the way they were made: full side-by-side 3D, where each eye gets its own 1920-pixel picture.

It is also a home for real-time 3D experiences. You look into the glasses. Your phone becomes the controller. No headset strapped to your face, just glasses, a cable and a phone.

How it works

Plug in. Switch to 3D. Look up.

  1. Plug in

Connect your AR glasses to your phone with USB-C. The glasses become a big private screen.

  2. Switch to 3D

Press your glasses' 3D button. ARTwain shows you where it is on your model.

  3. Watch

Each eye gets its own full picture. Your brain does the rest, and the art steps out into the room.

  4. Play

Your phone is the controller. Touch, press and swipe while the world happens in the glasses.

First experience

A Rubik's cube that floats in mid-air.

It hangs in front of you in real 3D. Touch your phone to point at a sticker, press firmly to grab it, and drag to turn the row. Drag on empty space to spin the whole cube.

The ARTwain Rubik's cube shown twice side by side, once for each eye, with the top layer caught mid-turn. Left eye Right eye
What the glasses get: two 1920 x 1080 pictures side by side, rendered live at 60 frames per second.
The same cube as an old-style red and cyan 3D picture.

Got old 3D glasses?

Put on the red and cyan ones.

Same two pictures, the 1950s way: the left eye in red, the right eye in cyan. AR glasses do it properly, in full colour, one screen per eye.

Artworks

The first artwork is almost ready.

A stereoscopic music video, made for two eyes from the first frame. Full side-by-side 3D, 3840 x 1080, 60 frames per second.

We are keeping it under wraps until the premiere. Leave your address and you will be among the first to see it.

The name

Three ideas in one word.

AR in ART
Augmented reality, hiding in plain sight inside art. The art is the point. The tech just lives in the middle of the word.
Twain
An old word for two. Two eyes, two pictures, side by side. With a nod to Mark Twain.
Charles's Wain
The old name for the Big Dipper. Charlie is short for Charles. That is the Dipper in our logo, seen through red and cyan 3D glasses.
